What is VoIP?
You’ve probably seen this strange acronym mentioned in the paper, trade
magazines, adverts or just floating around the internet. You may have heard it
referred to as IP telephony or Voice over Broadband. To whatever effect – all
of these terms are referring to a revolutionary new technology that is rapidly
changing the face of telecommunications, and therefore how business is
conducted.
VoIP stands for “Voice over Internet Protocol” and means that voice, or
sounds are translated into data and transmitted across an internet connection or
network - just like any other file or email you might send. Once the data
reaches the other end (be it a landline, mobile or IP phone) it is transformed
back into its original form and emerges like a regular phone call.
This process, of course, is so fast that you won’t even notice it happening.
Arguably, the most important fact about VoIP is that it uses broadband or a
DSL to carry digital signals and that the carrying capacity of this connection
is much higher than that of a traditional telephone line.
Whereas in the past – connecting one phone line would give you ONE phone, a
VoIP set-up will give you as many lines as your bandwidth can facilitate. For
this reason it is important to make clear how many extensions you will need and
to clarify whether or not you need to increase your bandwidth to facilitate them
(see broadband scaling chart attached). You will however, be paying less in
line rentals and PBX maintenance costs with VoIP.
entrust VoIP adds to all this by offering a selection of work-enhancing
features, a reliable support network and the experience and knowledge of a
successful multi-national telecommunications provider.
